The Pharaoh Hound is believed to be descended from the dogs pictured on the tombs of the kings of Egypt. Depictions on ancient buildings show these hounds being used by royalty to hunt rabbits, ostriches, and other wild game found in Egypt from 3000 to 2000 B.C. These dogs were prized: in 1935, a tomb was found just west of the pyramid of Cheops at Giza; The tomb belonged to a dog named Abuwtiyuw, and the burial had been carried out with all the usual trappings of royal burial.
